Start Calling Bullshit on People’s Barriers

This weekend, I had a powerful spiritual experience. In a warm candlelit room immersed in expressive music, I entered a state of deep introspection and connection to… something more.

I had set an intention for the evening: Discover what purpose had I set out for myself to accomplish in this life.

The answer came to me in bursts of inspiration throughout the evening, culminating in a verse of one of the songs that danced and spun out of my stereo speakers:

Time has come to speak of this love
Spread your wings of your song and soul
To maintain internal heights above
Close your eyes and feel it unfold
Rush like a river from the highest mountain
Drink from the fountain and stop your counting

–Trevor Hall, from his song Volume (2009)

Along with this wake-up call of a song, a profound understanding blossomed within me–a rush of pure emotional certainty that there is no reason that humanity cannot live harmoniously. We just think we that can’t, and it is that thought that keeps us confined.

Since the flower-child generation that came of age in the 60′s, wave upon wave of increasingly spiritually connected individuals have been incarnating on Earth with the charge to remind humanity that all their precious divisions and walls are completely fake.

We all live in our paper houses, surrounded by our beliefs that “those people over there” are wrong. We remain caged in our own fears of not living up to someone (or our own) expectations. But all of it–value systems, expectations, criticisms–they’re mental constructs that have become psychological derangements of epidemic proportions.

It’s very easy to forget this, and that is why the mystics throughout the ages encouraged us to quiet our minds through spiritual practice with tools such as meditation, contemplative prayer, yoga and dance. More than mere “stress relief,” these tools help us to see the Unity of life that we all share, beyond the concepts and beliefs with which we separate ourselves and use to attempt to justify murder, war, elitism, racism, bigotry and hatred.

This business of burning human beings with napalm, of filling our nation’s homes with orphans and widows, of injecting poisonous drugs of hate into veins of peoples normally humane, of sending men home from dark and bloody battlefields physically handicapped and psychologically deranged, cannot be reconciled with wisdom, justice and love.

–Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., from his Speech at Riverside Church in New York City (April 4, 1967); emphasis mine

Time has come to speak of this Love, and call people–and ourselves–on our bullshit barriers that perpetuation our separation from each other and our Source. Do it kindly. Do it with Love. But for humanity’s sake, do it.
